Some of Africa’s most iconic beers have been gathered together in a unique, eight-can multipack, to raise money to help prevent poorer students from going hungry.
The Beers for Africa initiative is a partnership between our South African business, SAB, and the international non-governmental organization Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHNSA). For the launch edition, SAB is showcasing eight popular beers from our various breweries across Africa. They are:
· Castle Lager (South Africa)
· St Louis (Botswana)
· Maluti Premium Lager (Lesotho)
· Manica, 2M and Laurentina Preta (Mozambique)
· Kilimanjaro Premium Lager (Tanzania)
· Zambezi Premium Lager (Zimbabwe)
For every Beers for Africa pack sold, three nutritious meals will be provided for students at South African universities, helping to keep them full and committed to their studies. This is a key goal for SHNSA, which has looked into the effects of hunger at one of the universities it supports, and found that around 40% of students fail in their studies because they have not eaten enough if at all.
“Our ambition is to provide one million meals for students by 2018, and then repeat this number every year,” said Ricardo Tadeu, President of Africa for AB InBev. “But beyond that, we will also be supporting agricultural development in the different countries, as each beer will be sourced locally, with the key ingredients grown by local farmers.
“We’re bringing a taste of Africa to South Africa and the world, and – at the same time – we are making a tangible difference in society. Beer drinkers can enjoy the best of Africa and help us make the world a better place.”
Packs went on sale in selected South African outlets in April, and there are plans to expand into duty-free stores across the African continent, as well as into other international markets, such as the United States.
With such a wealth of great beer brands across our African portfolio, future Beers for Africa packs will be rejigged to showcase as many as possible.
